Current Events

Recent headlines about Haitian immigrants underscore the need to discuss immigration and the factors that lead people to seek new opportunities elsewhere. This is a chance to explore why people flee their home countries and what challenges they face as immigrants.

Learn About Haiti: Read an article from National Geographic Kids and download our free response sheet Haiti.pdf for individual written responses or whole-group discussions.

Picture Books & Activities:

  • My Day with the Panye by Tami Charles A young girl in Haiti is eager to learn how to carry a large woven basket to the market, just like her Manman. The author's note at the end includes information about the art of carrying a panye - an ancient and global practice.
  • Freedom Soup by Tami Charles A beautiful tribute to the author's own Ti Gran (grandmother) who introduced her to the taste and history of Freedom Soup, also known as Soup Joumou, eaten by Haitians on New Year’s Day.

October 2-4: Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah is a time to reflect, sing, pray, gather with loved ones and, of course, eat delicious apple treats and round challah.

Providing early education about Jewish contributions, history and culture is an essential component of affirming Jewish identity and countering antisemitism. In celebration of Rosh Hashanah, PJ Library has curated a list of their favorite children’s books about the Jewish New Year. -PJ Library

October 7-11: Teach Central America Week

"More than seven million Central Americans reside in the United States today, yet the lack of resources on Central American heritage in most schools makes the rich history and literature of the region invisible. Central America is too often portrayed as simply a strip of land on a map connecting North and South America. Students are left to imagine that their Central American heritage, or that of their peers, is insignificant. Teachers have learned little of the history themselves and there is a scarcity of literature in the school libraries. Teaching for Change has launched a campaign to help fill that gap with resources for teaching about Central America."

Teaching ideas include books and activities covering history, geography, people, animals, art, the environment, and more.

October 9: Hangul Day

This day honors the creation of the Korean alphabet, Hangul, which was created in 1443 by King Sejong the Great.

Lit Connection:

King Sejong Invents an Alphabet In 15th-century Korea, King Sejong was distressed. The complicated Chinese characters used for reading and writing meant only rich, educated people could read―and that was just the way they wanted it. But King Sejong thought all Koreans should be able to read and write, so he worked in secret for years to create a new Korean alphabet. -Amazon

Promote awareness and action for achieving food security for all, with these World Food Day learning activities for kids.

October 28: Mix-It-Up at Lunch

It’s a simple call to action for all grade levels: Take a new seat in the cafeteria. By taking a risk, students can cross the lines of division in a safe, supported environment, meet new people, and help build an inclusive and welcoming school community.

Learning for Justice, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, launched Mix It Up in 2001. Schools can organize a Mix-It-Up at Lunch Day any time during the school year. Download the Mix-It-Up Starter Guide for tips and ideas.

October 31: Halloween
