May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month

Recognize and honor the contributions, cultures, and histories of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This month provides an opportunity to learn about the diverse traditions, experiences, and achievements of AANHPI communities while reflecting on their impact in shaping American history and society.

May 1 is Lei Day, a statewide celebration of Hawaiian culture, or the aloha spirit. Each Hawaiian island has a different type of lei for its people to wear in the celebration.


May is Jewish American Heritage Month

Recognize Jewish Americans' history, culture, and contributions to the United States. The month honors the Jewish community's rich traditions, resilience, and achievements across many fields, including science, arts, politics, and social justice. It also provides an opportunity to learn about Jewish heritage and promote understanding and inclusion.

Lit Connections: Books for PJ Library are chosen from among the very best of Jewish children's books. A committee of writers, early childhood professionals, and Jewish content specialists seek out compelling stories, captivating illustrations, and diverse perspectives on Jewish customs and practice. Through an extensive evaluation process, the committee selects books for every age group. Many of the books selected to be included in PJ Library have received awards including Caldecott Medals and the Sydney Taylor Book awards, given to the best of Jewish children's literature.
