Go Global in March

Ukraine, Hina Matsuri, Holi, Nowruz, Earth Hour, Multicultural Book Reviews

We just returned from exploring Puerto Rico - Isla del Encanto (Island of Enchantment) 🇵🇷

Highlights: walking through the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, night kayaking through mangroves into a bioluminescent bay in Fajardo, and trekking through the El Yunque rainforest straight up to this beautiful view!

Our hearts are broken with the news and images out of Ukraine, and we pray for peace. ☮️

In an effort to connect kids to the country they are hearing about in the news, we created our next profile page for exploring the geography and culture of Ukraine.

Ukraine Profile

All of our country profile pages include an infographic, detailed map, national symbols, photo gallery, informational video, recommended books, learning activities, and more! Invite explorers to click on a country from our world map, and start their learning adventure!

March 3 Hina Matsuri

Also known as the Japanese Doll Festival or Girls' Day, this special day is devoted to wishing health and happiness to all girls. Special dolls for the occasion (hina) are arranged on a tiered stand called a hinadan.

Click here to learn about the preparations and traditions, and print some fun activities - including making origami Hina Dolls.

March 18 Holi

Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors, is a joyful celebration that marks the beginning of spring and honors the triumph of good over evil. Throwing gulal (colored powder), eating sweets, dancing to traditional folk music, and lighting bonfires are all part of the holiday!

Join the author for a Storytime Read-Along of an adventure in India and an introduction to the story and traditions of the Holi festival.

Free activities include a Sliding Pichkari Card, Holi dances, Flashcards, and Hindi Color Hop activity.

March 21 Nowruz

Nowruz ("new day") marks the first day of spring and is the New Year festival for Iran and other countries - including Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Our friends at Joy Sun Bear provide helpful information and activities for learning more about the celebration and traditions.

Book Riot suggests these six Persian New Year Children's Books to learn more.

March 26 Earth Hour

Click flashlights, light lanterns, and get ready to turn electric lights out to celebrate Earth Hour - a worldwide movement in support of energy conservation and sustainability, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
