August 9 Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters. Observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana (usually in August), sisters tie a rakhi (decorative thread) on their brothers’ wrists as a symbol of love and protection. In return, brothers give gifts and pledge to support and protect their sisters. The festival is a joyful celebration of family, affection, and lifelong bonds. Click here for Books & Activities.

August 12 World Elephant Day

Teaching Tools About Elephants from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) includes a PowerPoint presentation, cross-curricular learning activities, printables, videos, quizzes, and more.

August 13 Obon is a traditional Japanese festival to honor the spirits of ancestors. Families return to their hometowns, clean graves, and make offerings of food and incense. The festival is known for Bon Odori dances, floating lanterns, and other rituals meant to guide ancestral spirits back to the spirit world. Obon is both a time of remembrance and a celebration of family and cultural traditions.

The Japan Society provides information, videos, and printable activities to explore this important celebration.

August 19 World Humanitarian Day

NEW POST! Helping Hands Around the World: Teaching Kids About Humanitarians Definitions, examples, and meaningful activities to help students understand what it means to be a humanitarian – and to consider how they can make a difference too.

August 27 La Tomatina is a world-famous festival in Buñol, Spain. Thousands of participants gather to take part in a massive tomato fight, hurling overripe tomatoes at one another purely for fun.

Lit Connection: Food Fight Fiesta: A Tale of La Tomatina Illustrations and rhyming text depict the fiesta of La Tomatina, during which the small town of Bunol, Spain, becomes the site of a massive, tomato-throwing food fight. Includes facts about the festival and glossary of Spanish words.

August 29 Double Seventh Festival, also known as Qixi Festival or Chinese Valentine’s Day, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. It originates from a romantic legend about the love between a weaver girl (Zhīnǚ) and a cowherd (Niúláng), who are separated by the Milky Way and allowed to reunite once a year on this special day. The festival celebrates love and devotion, and common traditions include stargazing, crafting, and expressing affection through gifts or wishes.

Learn about the legend and traditions of the festival. Have students compare the Qixi Festival traditions to their own Valentine's Day traditions.
