August 3-6 Kanto Matsuri, Japan Learn about a Japanese festival, or matsuri, and follow it up with a fun STEM activity! ​One of the highlights of Kanto Matsuri is watching performers balance kanto (long bamboo poles) with paper lanterns attached to the end.
August 9 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples This day is to raise awareness about the challenges Indigenous people face, promote and protect their rights, and celebrate their culture, traditions, and heritage. "Indigenous Peoples live in all regions of the world and own, occupy or use some 22% of global land area. Numbering at least 370-500 million, Indigenous Peoples represent the greater part of the world’s cultural diversity. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. Despite their cultural differences, Indigenous Peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples. August 10 Qixi Festival, China Also known as the Chinese Valentine's Day and the Double Seventh Festival, this holiday falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. Learn about the legend and traditions of the festival. Have students compare the Qixi Festival traditions to their own Valentine's Day traditions.
